Madison, Dane County begin exploring rules on ‘hyperscale’ data centers


A week after Dane County passed an 18-month moratorium on data center development, Madison officials said they’re aiming to release draft zoning regulations for the controversial facilities by the fall.

Madison officials gave an update on the city’s data center moratorium, passed by the City Council in January, at a recent public meeting.

City staff have found six standalone data centers in the Madison area, along with “numerous” smaller data center spaces incorporated into larger buildings. Existing facilities were unaffected by the council’s January vote to institute a 12-month pause on new data center development and won’t be shut down by any zoning code update given the facilities were already permitted...
