Once the world’s largest office building, this Art Deco behemoth has been reborn after two $40 million renovations. The Merchandise Mart stands at the point of downtown Chicago where both branches of the Chicago River meet, a position that has helped to ensure its status as a critical center of commerce for nearly a century. Once the world’s biggest building, the hulking Art Deco structure remains the largest privately held commercial structure in the US, with around 4.2 million gross square feet of space, covering two city blocks and rising 340 feet. Having served a variety of uses since opening at the height of the Great Depression in 1930, today the Merchandise Mart has found new purpose as “The Mart” — an amenity-stuffed, maximally sociable office building meant for the post-pandemic workday, thanks to a two-phased renovation completed last summer... RSK: I always admired the behemoth myself and remember looking out of my Hotel room in downtown Chicago at it when I took my CCIM courses. A great redo and rehab. | ||
