California Gov. Gavin Newsom and lawmakers are negotiating whether to extend the state`s ban on evictions for unpaid rent.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gov. Gavin Newsom says California will pay off all the past-due rent that accumulated in the nation`s most populated state because of the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, a promise to make landlords whole while giving renters a clean slate.

Left unsettled is whether California will continue to ban evictions for unpaid rent beyond June 30, a pandemic-related order that was meant to be temporary but is proving difficult to undo...

RSK: Wow! I am not sure this is the answer. What about people who had a hard time paying their mortgages and property taxex. Pay that off as well or forgive that? Would it not be better to have the State pay for child care and subsidize wages to at least $15/hour?

That way the State would get its income tax, the job shortage would shrink and a small economic boon might happen....but just giving money away with little means to recoup it might not be the ideal solution. Don`t get me wrong, some people need a safety net but surely not everyone. What about those that skimped, gave up certain items, and did pay all or most of their rent? Now, where is the incentive to keep paying at all? This seems truly subsidized housing at a major level with little or no reason to go back to work or pay rent. It is a conundrum for sure.
