NYC Restaurants Will Soon Be Allowed to Add Up to 10 Percent Surcharge to Diners’ Bills

Restaurants in the city will be able to tack on the extra charge as a COVID-19 recovery measure

NY City Council has voted today in favor of a bill that will give restaurants in the city the option to add a surcharge of up to 10 percent to diners’ bills as an economic recovery support measure during the pandemic. The provision will go into effect immediately after the mayor, who is in support of the bill, signs it into law. It will extend until 90 days after indoor dining at full capacity is allowed.

RSK: This is supposed to continue even after the pandemic ends? Hmmm...wonder if patrons will put up with this. I know this is done with private clubs and restaurants but this is new. The only good thing about it is there looks to be no sales tax on it and the restaurateur can us it for whatever he wants other than tips and wages.

Ken Notes: I do not get this any restaurant could just adjust their prices anyway???
